# From Punishment to Support: A New Vision for Schools

Schools should be spaces where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered to learn and grow. Yet for too many Black and Brown students, school has become a place of punishment rather than support, fueling a cycle known as the school-to-prison pipeline. Break the [**Pipeline Foundation**](https://www.excellenceproject.org/) envision a new educational approach, one that prioritizes restorative practices and builds supportive, inclusive environments for all students.

In this reimagined system, discipline focuses on understanding and addressing students’ unique needs, not penalizing them. Instead of suspensions, expulsions, or zero-tolerance policies, schools would use restorative justice, counseling, and mentorship to keep students engaged and thriving. This shift creates an environment that recognizes students as individuals rather than potential ‘problems’ and helps them build the social and emotional skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

The Break the Pipeline Foundation is dedicated to disrupting the harmful cycle that often begins in schools and leads to incarceration. Through advocacy, training, and community partnerships, they support schools in adopting practices that emphasize support over punishment.

Together, we can create a future where schools play a role in breaking the cycle, not perpetuating it—a future where Black and Brown youth are empowered to succeed, not criminalized. By fostering a culture of care and inclusion, schools can be instrumental in creating long-term change and breaking the pipeline for good.
